Brits are 'unconcerned' by online fraud
New figures have shown that Britons are unconcerned about the threat of online fraud.
Research by Lloyds TSB internet banking has found that just over half (51 per cent) of those polled said they were not concerned about the problem. Furthermore, only a fifth of respondents understood how to be fully protected online, highlighting a gap in knowledge on the subject.
Thus, Lloyds TSB has enlisted the help of former TV presenter Johnny Ball to provide customers with the know-how on online security using a special podcast.
Managing director of consumer banking for Lloyds TSB Ian Larkin comments that anyone using internet banking must do their bit.
"Internet fraud is an issue no one can afford to ignore and it is by no means a victimless crime. Its impact stretches far beyond the customer whose money is taken and the bank it is taken from," he remarks.
The results of the survey found 40 per cent of Brits don't care about online fraud as their banks will reimburse them, whereas just under half said the convenience outweighed any security risks - perhaps showing the acceptance of such services by consumers.
Web businesses and retailers were urged yesterday by the House of Lords science and technology committee to become involved in the fight against e-crime.
