Google has public vote

The search engine giant Google has the confidence of the general public, a new poll suggests.

Research conducted by Bigmouthmedia shows that British internet users want Google to stay leader of the search engine industry.

Only six per cent wanted the company to fall from grace and lose out to a rival, while half the respondents wanted Google to remain on top although the rest were unsure.

Internet commentator Danny Sullivan comments that Google does not want to be seen as "gobbling up" the world.

"I suspect the best way to counter concerns is to be as open in advance of any moves, hear feedback and be shown as actually responsive by making some changes. I think recent moves with the cookies and log data retention is an example of this," he remarked.

The study suggests that women are more supportive of Google as fewer women wanted the company to lose its dominating status and more were happy to see it continue to succeed. When asked if they thought Google would still be the top search engine in five years time men were slightly more supportive, with 62 per cent answering yes.

Recent fears of data protection have been tackled by the top search engine companies, including Google, who have all pledged to lessen the amount of sensitive information about users that is kept on record.
