Small businesses should 'invest' in internet technology

Small businesses are being urged by an expert in the computer software industry to invest money into their internet technology systems.

Consultant security forum manager for the British Computer Society (BCS) Andrea Simmons comments that businesses need to undertake a risk assessment of their technology operations.

"It's the whole spend to save mentality required. You do need to put some investment in," she remarks.

Ms Simmons states that broadband can be potentially dangerous for companies if they do not have their technology updated to deal with the added requirements such developments need. She mentions firewalls and anti-virus software as applications that should be activated in offices.

She adds that companies that spend money now will create long-term gains.

The BCS recommends that companies ensure customer details are protected when outsourcing IT work to web companies and improved mechanisms should be in place to combat the threat of online fraud from internet criminals.

These comments follow a statement by the House of Lords science and technology committee yesterday that claimed businesses and service providers need to take control and share responsibility of online security threats to customers.
